The “katikià” are small rural buildings that dot the countryside of the island of Paros. They were the rural farmhouses that gave to their inhabitants the necessary space needed by farmers and ranchers.
It constitutes the most representative type of farm building, made of an anonymous architecture, but at the same time important part of the cultural heritage of the Aegean.
The developing of this kind of constructions was due to the nature of settlements on the island that were fortified and had no space at all for farming.
The term “katikià” describes a band usually including the house —made of one or two rooms in a row, the indoor courtyard, the stables, cells to store food or tools, oven, chicken coop, pigeon house, barn, wine press, rakidio (the space dedicated to the distillation of the local brandy the «raki»). In this environment homemade cheeses were prepared, food such as meat was preserved and «raki» was distilled.
The “katikià” was built from local stone, the roof was made of logs, reeds and mud layers with algae.
The premises were built irregularly and more rooms were added according to the needs of the household.
These consecutive architectural spaces have an extraordinary plasticity and beauty that sparkle under the Cycladic light in perfect harmony with the local environment.
